The Good, the Bod, and the Beautiful of Teeth Whitening
February 2, 2015
There is a lot of talk about teeth whitening right now, and whether you read a magazine or watch television, there is a good chance that you will see an ad for it. The questions become, what products work and what doesn’t? In our dental office, we get a lot of questions from patients that are confused about what they should and shouldn’t try. Given the mixed results that products can deliver, this can become even more confusing. Fortunately, we are the experts and here to help you make sense of it all.
Clearly the best type of teeth whitening takes place at our dentist office. There are several reasons for this including the fact that our whitening solution is stronger and naturally, the stronger the solution, the better the results. Still, it goes far beyond the type of solution that we use. As your dentist, we are invested in your long-term oral health. That means that we will take the time to examine your teeth and gums to ensure that you don’t have any cavities or infections prior to getting started. It also means that we will be careful with how much of the whitening solution we use and how long your teeth are exposed to it, in order to prevent sensitivity. When you schedule an appointment with us, you can get the bright white teeth you are looking for, without the risk that comes from trying an at-home procedure.
If you are going to try a teeth whitening product at home, we recommend that you have whitening trays created using a mold of your mouth. This way the solution won’t leak out. Otherwise, stick with whitening toothpaste. The paste won’t actually remove stains, but it can help to brighten your teeth in between visits to our dental office.
Whitening pens are not what they claim to be. In order for your teeth to actually whiten, you need to have enough solution applied to your teeth, and it must remain there for a period of time. Anything that you simply brush onto your teeth will be washed away quickly due to the saliva in your mouth. It won’t have enough time to penetrate through your enamel and address any of your deep stains. Most people that try a whitening pen are disappointed as a result.
Store-bought whitening trays are also a cause for disappointment. They don’t fit well, and most people end up with solution leaking into their mouth, creating significant discomfort and even gum irritation. This unpleasant situation is entirely avoidable when you have whitening trays created for you. Simultaneously, whitening strips tend to slip out of place and regardless of what the ads claim, you can’t really speak with them in – it’s awkward to try.
You can have a gorgeous smile that lights up the room without a lot of effort. Simply schedule an appointment with our dental office to have your teeth cleaned and a teeth whitening procedure. In no time, you will have beautiful and healthy teeth – something to really smile about.
